Tyler’s Big Chop for a Big Cause

Tyler, a Nanaimo local with a big heart and even bigger hair, first heard about the Take a Hike Foundation at an event in September 2024. Inspired by the work being done to support youth in his community, he knew he wanted to get involved—but he wasn’t interested in your average fundraiser.

Instead, Tyler decided it was finally time to part ways with something he’d been holding onto for nearly a decade: his thick, curly brunette locks. After eight years of growing his hair, Tyler chose three charities close to his heart—one of which was Take a Hike—and launched a creative fundraiser. He invited friends, family, and coworkers to donate, promising a spot in the haircutting lineup to those who gave the most.

When the big day came, Tyler hosted a lively party where his hair was braided into dozens of tiny braids. Laughter filled the room as top donors each took a turn snipping off a braid. In total, Tyler raised $3,000—dividing it equally among the three charities—and even donated his hair to a cancer organization.

Tyler’s fundraiser was a perfect example of how doing good doesn’t have to be boring. It can be meaningful, fun, and even a little ridiculous—in the best way.

We’re so grateful for community fundraisers like Tyler who support our youth in ways that are meaningful to them. If you have any questions, please reach out to philanthropy@takeahikefoundation.org.
