Land-based learning in Merritt stimulates mental health
Take a Hike is a full-time education program in Merritt that offers an alternative learning experience for students who struggle with mental health and may not be a good fit for a traditional classroom setting. The program has space for 20 students each year, and is built around four pillars: clinical counselling, academics, outdoor land-based learning and community involvement.
As the youth in the program work towards their high school diploma through individual education plans (I.E.Ps), they also integrate cross curricular outdoor activities. Students typically spend one day outside of the classroom each week and have the option to join a seasonal multi-day expedition.
